I recommend

Preface

During my quest for the best host, I tested, in one form or another, hundreds of hosting providers. However, there are quite few I consider the best of the best. Look below; every hosting provider I recommend was a home for some of my sites, or for sites of people I trust for at least 3 months.

You may notice I haven't active VPSes at some of the providers I recommend. That's normal - I use VPS for as long as it is required. Since I often choose new VPS providers to run miscellaneous tests, VPS can be retired when they have served their purpose.

Longer description

Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services

AWS is one of the most used and most known cloud-based services provider. I use several of AWS services, including EC2 (I keep a private repository on one of EC2 instances), S3, Route 53.

AWS isn't a "tune everything to your taste" type of cloud services provider. It takes time to get accustomed to rules and limitations of the service. However, its powerful API gives possibility to control every service from command line (and/or a GUI application, if you prefer).

When you sign up for AWS, you are mostly on your own. However, forums could get enough information, if the vast documentation isn't covering your specific question.

JaguarPC
JaguarPC

I stay with JaguarPC for almost six years, since July, 2006. Since I am a demanding type of a customer, it means JaguarPC can meet my criteria of a good hoster.

Although I mostly use JaguarPC reselling hosting, their VPS plans are as solid and reliable.

Just an overview: with the reseller account comes SSH access (on request, no extra payment); I may use Subversion and other control version clients from that shell. Quick, efficient and polite support. Yes, there were downtimes, but I most value the ability of a host to handle such problems, since it happens to everyone.

Burst.net
Burst.net

Although currently I do not have a VPS at Burst.net (but plan to, quite soon), I had several times in the past.

Burst.net can be called the champion of budget and premium VPS hosting. The lowest Linux VPS, at cost of 5.95 USD, was and remains my favourite tool. Despite its moderate capabilities, I used it to run quite a heavy DLE-powered site for many months. For more details of that, contact the owner of RusDemotivator.

I love unmanaged VPS hosting, since I am able to handle those myself. In fact, I am fond of setting up and tuning VPSes. By the way, if you happen to order a VPS through the links to the left, feel free to contact me if you want it to be tuned for most efficiency and security. At a significant discount or free of charge.

Important: use discount code FALL10 (active up to 31-st of October, 2012) to receive 10% permanent discount off any Burst.net service.

Hot! Starting 29-th of September, 2012, Burst.net offers superfast SSD-powered Ultra VPS plans.

Blue Light Host
Blue Light Host

Blue Light Host is a brand owned by iCloudHosting, well-known UK-based cloud hosting provider. This site, as well as several others, are hosted here. If you look at the specifications and benchmarks, you could understand this choice.

Most interesting feature of this hosting provider is their offer of a free cloud server. After passing not-too-cumbersome anti-fraud checks, you will be given a fully functional cloud server, for a week. Enough to make an impression.

Support is quick and adequate. However, as I mentioned above, I rarely contact support of unmanaged hosting plans. If the server runs fine and connectivity isn't broken, there's no need to bother support.

Once again, if you register through the link to the left, feel free to contact me if you need assistance in setting up your VPS.

miniVPS
miniVPS

Despite its name, miniVPS does offer quite powerful VPSes. Since this is one of companies offering very efficient SSD-powered VPSes, I strongly recommend considering this hosting provider when you need a fast and inexpensive VPS.

At the moment, I have no active VPS at this provider; however, I did for quite a time to make an impression. I like the quality of both support and services provided.

ThrustVPS
Damn::VPS aka ThrustVPS

Let an unusual name not frighten you away. I am one of the users who witnessed sad events related to FsckVPS (the well-known July 2009 attack using HyperVM exploit), had my VPS there demolished; I chose Damn::VPS afterwards.

I can only say: efficient, friendly and fast. I have used their services long enough to recommend this provider to people looking for reliable and inexpensive VPSes.

To be reviewed

The following VPS/DS/cloud servers providers are waiting for the review (I either haven't used their services long enough, or haven't yet conclude the impression): directspace.net, urpad.net, pioneernetworksolutions.com, databasebydesignllc.com, pieserv.com, cinfu.com, prohosterz.com, dorblock.com, 64u.com, evorack.com, 123com.org, v7host.com, asurahosting.com, turnkeyinternet.net, semoweb.com, infinitie.net, vpsdeploy.com, digicube.fr and several others.

Name ye cloud

I have already mentioned Amazon Web Services and Blue Light Host. The following cloud providers have been thoroughly tested either recently or in the past, I found them very useful for a number of use cases, and will review in more details in the foreseeable future: vpsfarm.com, elastichosts.com, gogrid.com, gigenetcloud.com, rackspacecloud.com, greenqloud.com, nephoscale.com, cloudsigma.com.

Third-party advise...

The following hosters were not yet tested by me, but I had quite a number of good references to them: prgmr.com, knownhost.com, joyent.com (also as cloud provider).
